Little Shrikethrush
Calls & Sounds
The Little Shrikethrush (Colluricincla megarhyncha) is a songbird found in Australia and New Guinea. The taxonomy of this cryptic species group is complex – currently there are around 28 subspecies recognized and some consider the group to represent at least seven different species.
What does a Little Shrikethrush sound like? The song of the Little Shrikethrush consists of loud, rich, fluty phrases, each phrase often ends with a sharp, whiplash note. Even within a local population, song phrases are highly variable and can contain a range of melodic whistles, warbles and squeaky notes. Little Shrikethrushes also make simpler, repetitive whistled phrases, sharp single note ‘charip’ calls, and harsh scolding sounds. There is also significant regional variation to these calls.
