Australia: Outback Dawn

Recorded in spring the arid shrublands of Paroo-Darling National Park, Australia, this soundscape features a rich melodic dawn chorus as the outback awakens to a new day. The area was alive with wildflowers and birdsong after recent rains and it was a joy to see & hear so much biodiversity in this remote and rugged environment.

The album begins in the darkness before dawn with the distant warbling of several Australian Magpies along with the superb ethereal phrases of a Pied Butcherbird drifting in the cool morning air. Willie Wagtails sing their ‘sweet pretty creature‘ song and as the light brightens Spiny-cheeked Honeyeaters can start to be heard making a range of fluty, reedy whistled phrases.

From 13:30, the dawn chorus intensifies as a number of other species join the symphony including Singing Honeyeater and Red-capped Robin. After around 21:00 the unique, ever-changing liquid rhythms of Crested Bellbirds begin, one of the most distinctive sounds of the Australian outback.

Gradually the dawn chorus transforms into a more dispersed soundscape, and the second half of the album is a gentler morning ambience featuring the sounds of many other outback birds. See below for more details on the bird species heard in this recording.
