Video Overview: Pizzey & Knight Birds of Australia Digital Edition

by | Nov 27, 2013 | Location & Trip Updates

I’ve had the pleasure of using the PC version of Pizzey & Knight’s Birds of Australia Digital Edition for a couple of months now and I must say it is an outstanding product in a class of it’s own.

Three years have passed since the release of Michael Morcombe’s eGuide to the Birds of Australia, which up to now had been standing alone in it’s field of electronic Australian bird field guides. Morcombe’s eGuide received many good reviews for usefulness in the field, however compared with similar products available in other countries such as the ‘Birds of Northern Europe’ app there was still plenty of room for improvement. Enter Pizzey & Knight’s Birds of Australia Digital Edition. Available immediately for Windows and iOS and soon to be released for Android, this new offering raises the bar significantly.

This digital edition was produced by Guy Gibbon of Gibbon Multimedia, the same name behind the RSPB Birds of Britain and Ireland Digital Edition, and Robert’s Multimedia Birds of South Africa. I have used Robert’s Multimedia guide on my Android device and it’s an excellent product. I asked Guy if we could expect something similar from the new Pizzey & Knight DE (Digital Edition) and he assured me it would be all that the Robert’s app is and more. I look forward to using the Android version once it’s available.

Some question the value of this type of ‘new’ birding technology, but in my opinion there are a few distinct advantages the P&K Digital Edition has over the book edition. For example:

  • Portability
  • Additional media such as photos and calls on hand (and available ‘offline’)
  • Ability to create helpful location and personal lists

Rather than detail all of the product specifications and features (You can find all of that on the product website http://www.gibbonmm.com.au/ ) I thought it would be helpful to share my experiences using the Windows PC version of the program and include some video overviews so others can get a good idea of what to expect.

The videos have been broken up into six parts –

  1. Part One – Introduction, Field Guide & Bird Guide
  2. Part Two – Comparing Species
  3. Part Three – Identification
  4. Part Four – Location Lists
  5. Part Five – My Lists
  6. Part Six – Editing Data. Birding Sites & Habitats. Conclusion
