Scarlet Macaws (Ara macao)

The Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao) is a large, stunning species of macaw found in Central and South America. As a result of poaching for the pet trade and habitat loss, Scarlet Macaw populations have significantly declined in Central America. In South America populations are currently more stable, although ongoing deforestation in the Amazon means their habitat is progressively disappearing.

What does a Scarlet Macaw sound like? Scarlet Macaws make extremely loud, raucous ‘raaaak’ calls. These calls are often given in flight. When perched or feeding, Scarlet Macaws give quieter grating calls and growls.
