Singing Honeyeater
Calls & Song
The Singing Honeyeater (Gavicalis virescens) is a common, medium-sized honeyeater widespread across Australia, favouring shrubland, woodland and coastal habitats, particularly west of the Great Dividing Range. It’s a familiar species across much of semi-arid Australia and in the south-west.
What does a Singing Honeyeater sound like? The Singing Honeyeater makes a wide range of vocalizations, most consisting of pleasant clear whistles and trills. The dawn song is often made up of simple, repetitive melodic whistled phrases. At other times of the day song phrases are more varied. A commonly heard call is a single note or double note hoarse ‘preet’ or ‘pre-eet’. Other calls include long bubbly trilling calls, mewing calls and harsh scolds.
The calls of the Singing Honeyeater are a common sound in many drier woodlands and semi-arid regions of Australia.
