Superb Fruit Dove (Ptilinopus superbus)

The Superb Fruit Dove (Ptilinopus superbus) is a colourful species of pigeon found in Queensland and New South Wales, as well as in New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and on a number of neighbouring islands. Despite its vivid plumage, it can be surprisingly difficult to spot, staying high in the canopy where it feeds on rainforest fruits.

What does a Superb Fruit Dove sound like? The most commonly-heard call of the Superb Fruit Dove is a series of 5-20 deep upslurred ‘whoop’ notes. The series often begins with a single flat ‘hooo’ note. It also gives a more rapid series of low, repeated “oom” notes which accelerate and often slow again before the end of the series. Sometimes single ‘oom’ or double ‘oom-whoop’ calls can be heard.
