University of Cambridge: West Papua Exhibition
Nature sounds from New Guinea were featured as part of an exhibition showcasing the culture and art of West Papua.
An exhibition showcasing the art and culture of West Papua was hosted at Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology in Cambridge in 2015. Collections of traditional headdresses made with cassowary feathers were featured, and the unique sound of the Southern Cassowary was used to complement this part of the exhibition.
This project is an example of sounds being used to enhance engagement at museum exhibitions. Creative use of sound can provide a more immersive, sensory experience for visitors.
The Southern Cassowary’s call is the lowest frequency known sound from any bird. Put some headphones on & listen to the example below:
