African Fish Eagle
Call & Sounds
The African Fish Eagle (Icthyophaga vocifer) is a large, striking species of eagle found along rivers and wetlands throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa. This species feeds primarily on fish, which it captures by swooping down upon and snatching with its talons from the surface of the water.
The call of the African Fish Eagle is one of the most evocative bird sounds of Africa and is a common sound in wetlands and waterways within the range of this species. The typical ‘song’ consists of a series of piercing, plaintive wails which are often given as a duet by a pair of birds.
