Blacksmith Lapwing
Call & Sounds
The Blacksmith Lapwing (Vanellus armatus) is a species of plover found in sub-Saharan Africa. They are common along waterways and in wetlands throughout much of their range. This species is also known as the Blacksmith Plover.
What does a Blacksmith Lapwing sound like? Blacksmith Lapwings are a noisy species and are named for their distinctive metallic ‘tink’ calls which sound like a blacksmith’s hammer on an anvil. They also make an accelerating series of rolling, nasal calls and grating rattles. The metallic ‘tink calls are often given in alarm and these sounds act as a warning to other birds and animals in the area that a possible threat is in the area.
