White Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum)

White Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum)

There are two species of rhinoceros native to Africa: the White Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) is found mainly in southern Africa, and the Black Rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) is more widespread and found in eastern and southern Africa. Sadly, populations of both of these rhino species have been ravaged by poaching, as their horn is prized in traditional Chinese medicine and is used as a status symbol to display success and wealth. There is no scientific evidence to support the idea of rhino horn having medicinal qualities.

What does a White Rhinoceros sound like? White Rhinos can produce a variety of sounds including deep gurgling bellows, grunting roars, growls, squeaks, screams as well as strange trumpeting calls.  The bellows and grunting sounds are often given when rhinos tussle to establish dominance.
