White-rumped Shama (Copsychus malabaricus)

White-rumped Shama (Copsychus malabaricus)

The White-rumped Shama (Copsychus malabaricus) is a species of songbird found throughout much of South-east Asia and in parts of the Indian subcontinent. White-rumped Shamas have unfortunately become targets of poaching pressure and as a result populations have declined significantly in recent years due to trapping for the cagebird trade. This species is sometimes placed in the genus Kittacincla and known as Kittacincla malabarica.

What does a White-rumped Shama sound like? White-rumped Shamas are known for their superb melodious song consisting of complex phrases with rich, musical fluty whistles. This species can also mimic the songs and calls of other bird species and often integrates this mimicry into its own song. White-rumped Shamas also make harsh scolding grating sounds as well as short ‘tck’ calls.
