Crested Owl
Calls & Sounds
The Crested Owl (Lophostrix cristata) is a striking species of owl found in Central & South America in lowland and mid-altitude forests.
What does a Crested Owl sound like? Crested Owls make a distinctive, low-pitched gruff ‘kworrr’, which can sound like the deep croak of a frog. These sounds are often repeated at intervals of 4-7 seconds and a series can continue for several minutes at a time. Each note is usually preceeded by a few soft knock sounds. Crested Owls also make higher-pitched mewing calls and throaty huffing sounds. They are a strictly nocturnal owl species and call througout the night.
