Tropical Screech Owl (Megascops choliba) – Rufous morph

The Tropical Screech Owl (Megascops choliba) is the most widespread and common species of owl found in Central & South America. It can be found in a variety of habitats including lowland rainforest, secondary growth, open woodland and suburban areas.  

What does a Tropical Screech Owl sound like? The song of the Tropical Screech Owl is a purring, rolling trill, usually followed by one of two punctuated ‘hoo’ notes. They also make a few other call types including excited cackling calls, a bubbly hooting series and a sharp single note squeaky alarm call.
