White-throated Toucan (Ramphastos tucanus)

The White-throated Toucan (Ramphastos tucanus) is species of toucan widespread in the Amazon region of South America. It is found in lowland tropical rainforest and spends much of its time in the canopy where it feeds on fruits and insects.

What does a White-throated Toucan sound like? White-throated Toucans make loud, far-carrying yelping songs which are one of the most characteristic sounds of lowland rainforest in the Amazon basin. Song phrases usually include a higher-pitched ‘keow’  introductory note followed by several ‘yelps’. There are often some softer rattling croaks given before the start of a series of song phrases. Young birds have been documented making a buzzy, squeaking call.

White-throated Toucans sometimes sing as pairs in duet, with the male’s song slightly lower-pitched than the female’s.
