Speckled Chachalaca
Sounds & Calls
The Speckled Chachalaca (Ortalis guttata) is found in forests and secondary growth in the western and southern Amazon basin of South America.
What does a Speckled Chachalaca sound like? Like other chachalacas, Speckled Chachalacas are noisy birds which make loud, raucous calls. These harsh, guttural song phrases have been transcribed as “ha-ga-GAA-gogok” are most often heard early in morning or at dusk when birds chorus as a group. The noisy cacophony of a singing group of chachalacas is a characteristic sound of the humid forests of the Amazon Basin. Speckled Chachalacas also make harsh repetitive staccato phrases as well as softer whines and chatter.
