Undulated Tinamou (Crypturellus undulatus)

The Undulated Tinamou (Crypturellus undulatus) is a common species of tinamou found across the Amazon region of South America. It is primarily found in humid lowland forests and like other tinamou species is much more commonly heard than seen.

What does an Undulated Tinamou sound like? The far-carrying whistled song of the Undulated Tinamou is one of the Amazon’s most characteristic sounds. Song phrases usually consist of three or four notes with the final note rising in pitch at the end “whoo-whiu whoo-whoeer’. These distinctive whistled phrases are given both day and night, although most frequently at dawn and dusk. Undulated Tinamous also make soft, bubbly clucking calls which are only audible at close range.
