Red-throated Caracara (Ibycter americanus)

The Red-throated Caracara (Ibycter americanus) is a charismatic species of bird of prey found in forests in Central and South America.

What does a Red-throated Caracara sound like? Red-throated Caracaras are noisy, raucous birds which are typically found in small groups in the canopy of rainforest. They make loud, harsh territorial calls ‘khya ka ka, khya ka kao, ka ka kaoo” and also call in chorus with a throaty trumpeting ‘khaaow, khieow, khaaow, khieow…’.  Red-throated Caracaras also make cackling alarm calls and creaky or whining contact calls. These large forest raptors have been known to harass and mob humans encroaching on their territories.
