Noisy Miner (Manorina melanocephala)

Noisy Miner (Manorina melanocephala)

The Noisy Miner (Manorina melanocephala) is a species of native Australian honeyeater found in a variety of habitats in eastern Australia. They have become overabundant in many disturbed habitats such as urban areas with parks and gardens. Due to their gregarious and territorial nature, Noisy Miner flocks tend to dominate other bird species and drive them away with aggressive behaviour.

What does a Noisy Miner sound like? Noisy Miners have a complex repertoire of vocalizations, and many of their calls are quite loud as the name suggests! Commonly heard calls include clear repetitive whistles, squeaky mewing calls, a stammering bubbly ‘teu’ series and sharp ‘tchip’ calls.  This species is one of Australia’s alarm clock birds with a resonant repetitive dawn song consisting of clear whistled notes. Noisy Miners also have different alarm calls which indicate whether the threat is an aerial bird-of-prey or a ground predator.
