Cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus)

Cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus)

The Cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus) [also known as Quarrion or Weiro bird] is a species of parrot endemic to mainland Australia. It is the smallest of the cockatoo species (family Cacatuidae). Cockatiels are primarily found in drier habitats such as semi-deserts, arid shrubland, grasslands and open woodlands. They are a nomadic species that follow the seeding of native grasses and agricultural crops.

Cockatiels are one of the most popular pet / companion parrot species in the world. This is no doubt due to their being relatively easy to breed in captivity as well as their docile, sociable behavior and their ability to mimic other sounds including human speech.

What does a Cockatiel sound like? The most commonly heard sounds of the Cockatiel are shrill, plaintive “queel” or “weero” calls. These calls are often given in flight, although a number of subtle variations are usually when birds are interacting or warning others of danger.
