Crimson Rosella
Calls & Sounds
Crimson Rosellas are quite vocal and make a wide range of sounds. Their song typically consists of simple melodic phrases of bell-like notes, each phrase repetaed several times. They also make strident, brassy ‘cussik-cussik’ calls which are often given in flight. Pairs or small groups of rosellas often make soft, squeaky chattering calls and sometimes wiggle and fan their tail while making the sounds!
The Crimson Rosella (Platycercus elegans) is a colourful species of parrot native to eastern Australia. It can be found in a range of habitats including rainforest, open eucalypt forest, alpine woodland and parks and gardens. Like many other parrot species, Crimson Rosellas depend on hollows for nesting.
