Noisy Friarbird (Philemon corniculatus)

Noisy Friarbird (Philemon corniculatus)

The Noisy Friarbird (Philemon corniculatus) is a large, bald-headed species of honeyeater aptly named for its loud calls and chattering. It is common throughout much of eastern Australia.

What does a Noisy Friarbird sound like? Noisy Friarbirds make a variety of loud squawks, chattering calls and yodelling comical songs. Typical calls include a strident ‘yah-kop!’ and ‘four o’clock’. Song phrases consist of rollicking, garrulous phrases which are often discordant with a touch of melody, and sometimes end with wild cackling chatter. These songs are sometimes given as a duet.

When large flocks of Noisy Friarbirds gather at flowering trees they create a cacophony of sound!
