Zebra Finch (Taeniopygia castanotis)

The Zebra Finch (Taeniopygia castanotis) is a common species of grassfinch found in a variety of drier habitats across much of the Australian mainland and also in parts of the Lesser Sundas. This species has also become one of the most popular birds in aviculture worldwide.

What does a Zebra Finch sound like? Zebra Finches make a range of different sounds – 12 different call-types have been described. Typical contact calls consist of a nasal, toy trumpet ‘nyieh-nyieh’, soft beeps and ‘tet’ notes. The song of the male Zebra Finch is a complex jumble of beeps and rhythmic chatter.
