Female Australian Wood Duck (Chenonetta jubata)
The Australian Wood Duck (Chenonetta jubata) is a common species of duck found across most of Australia, often seen grazing on grass in parks, farmland and around dams. It nests in tree hollows, and pairs typically stay together year-round. This species is also known as the Maned Duck or Maned Goose.
What does an Australian Wood Duck sound like? The most familiar call of this species is a distinctive, rising, nasal “gnnaow”, often given in a series. They also make faster chattering calls as they interact or have territorial disputes. Similar staccato grunting calls are given by birds at the nest hollow.
